The Challenge: Simulating Full Cooling Load Before Live IT Deployment

A large data center commissioning project required a reliable method to simulate the facility’s full cooling load before live IT equipment was installed. The customer needed to validate chilled water system performance, confirm chiller plant capacity, test pumping systems, and verify controls under realistic operating conditions.

Because the permanent data center load was not yet available, the commissioning team needed a temporary solution that could safely and accurately create the required heat load. Without this capability, final testing would have been delayed, and critical system issues may not have been discovered until much later in the project.

The Solution: Temporary Liquid Load Banks for Chilled Water Testing

HVAC RNTL provided temporary liquid load banks designed to create a controlled thermal load on the chilled water system. The equipment allowed the commissioning team to simulate real-world heat rejection requirements and validate how the chilled water plant responded under load.

The solution included the required temporary load bank equipment, pumping support, hoses, connections, and technical coordination needed to integrate the system into the customer’s commissioning plan. The liquid load banks provided a repeatable and adjustable load profile, allowing the team to test system performance at multiple operating points.

This gave the customer the ability to verify flow, temperature control, chiller staging, pump operation, and overall system stability before the data halls were placed into service.
